I really enjoyed this play. All of the characters go through a certain unique struggle but in a sense, they all go through the same thing because with each struggle comes oppression, be it racism or internalized oppression. One poem where I saw a lot of oppression was with the lady in blue, where she speaks how everything would be easier if she were white, “So why don’t we go on ahead & be white then.” At the same time she recognizes that she loves her culture because she loves their rhythm and their spice.
Another poem that really stood out to me was with the lady in red. The oppression we see here is that her baby’s father wanted to force her to marry her and make her do things that she did not want to do. He grabbed their child and threw them off from the 5th floor. The lady in red was oppressed because she kept saying that “here was nothing” she could do. The reason why she could not do anything was because she felt like, as a woman, that she was not physically strong enough to defend herself and her child. As a result, she kept internalizing the situation, which brings her internalized oppression.
In addition, we see internalized oppression with the lady in blue because she receives an abortion and kept thinking over and over again how she did not want anyone to find out so she wont be made fun of or judged, therefore she in internally oppressed.
